Robert John Mayer, 90, passed away Sunday morning, December 11, 2022 at Meadow View Manor, Sheboygan.

Bob was born on October 12, 1932, in Cleveland, WI, son of the late Louis and Mary (Petesch) Mayer. He was the second youngest, born into a family of 15 brothers and sisters, two which passed away as children.

On June 2, 1956, he married Alice Catherine Winkler at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Sheboygan. Together they raised 4 children. Alice preceded him in death on June 8, 2020.

Bob worked for his family business in Cleveland, hauling cattle to Chicago at 16 years old. He furthered his truck driving career, supporting his family as a semi driver for Kohler Company and then later for Borden Chemical. He was very proud of his driving safety record and received many awards and accolades including recognition for driving over a million miles without an accident.

He served in the Korean War and is the recipient of many honors as a veteran of the U.S. Army.

As a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sheboygan, Bob served as usher for many years. He was also a favorite of the Bingo crowd as he skillfully called out the numbers to anxious and excited players. He lit up the eyes of many children at Christmas as Santa Claus.

Bob was very devoted to his Catholic faith, watching EWTN for daily Mass and prayer. He was politically savvy and followed current events with a loud passion. He also enjoyed family visits, watching Packer games and enjoying the company of friends at his table during mealtime. He was loved by many, always greeting them with a nod, a hello or a thumbs up. No one was ever bothered that he may occasionally called you by the wrong name….as it endearingly becoming your new nickname. Bob brought immense joy to those around him and will be sorely missed.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Lori) Mayer and Tim (Patty) Mayer of Sheboygan, and two daughters, Carleen (Kevin) Widder of Plymouth and Karen Mayer of Sheboygan. He was loved by his eight grandchildren, Clay Mayer of Charlotte, NC, Ashley (Alan) Klemme of Green Bay, Amanda Mayer and Dylan Mayer (special friend, Lisa) all of Sheboygan, Joe (Kayla) Widder of Sheboygan, Jared (Ann Marie) Widder of San Diego, CA, Adam Widder of Milwaukee and Angel (Joe) Demey of Sheboygan. Bob was also blessed with 9 great-grandchildren, Nora Mayer, Brody Klemme, Lucas and Isaac Widder, Theodore, Leena, Claire and Therese Widder, and Elhyme Demey. He is furthered survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, all who he loved dearly.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Alice; his parents; father and mother-in-law, John and Dorothy Winkler; seven brothers, Fred, John, Joseph, Peter, Louis, Hilary and Richard and five sisters, Erma Dries, Mary Hanson, Ursula Rettela, Rita Huhn and Theresa Daun.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1305 Humboldt Ave., Sheboygan, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. Memorials to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Bob’ s name are appreciated.

With immense gratitude we thank the staff and residents of Meadow View Manor. We have grown to love so many of you. Thank you for your kind and compassionate care.
