Alfred A. Gross Jr., age 83, of Elkhart Lake, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. He was born in Sheboygan on July 7, 1935, the son of the late Alfred and Charlotte Borngraeber Gross.
He graduated from Central High School in 1954. Following high school, he served in the Naval Reserve for 8 years and worked for 12 years with Gross Refrigeration Sales and Service.
In January of 1967 he was hired by the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department. He was originally assigned to the jail division and later transferred to the patrol division. He served for over 25 years before retiring in 1992. During his service, he was a member of the dive team, water safety patrol and snowmobile patrol. He also served part-time with the DNR as a warden and owned his own electrical business.
On December 22, 1990 he was united in marriage to Susan Nyenhuis in Elkhart Lake. He enthusiastically enjoyed hunting, fishing, and any other projects that allowed him to be outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Susan, of Elkhart Lake; a daughter, Amy, of Plymouth; six grandchildren, Josh (Stephanie) Cowdy, Jason Cowdy, Rachel Cowdy, Joy (David) Becker, Faith Gross, and Charity (Lance) Little; five great-grandchildren; son-in-law Jim Cowdy; brother-in-law, Thomas (Sandy) Nyenhuis; and sister-in-law Jennifer (Brian) Gabrielse. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Al was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Karen Cowdy; a son, Timothy Gross; brother Jim (Marlene) Gross and sister Nancy (Glenn) Walvoort.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 4930 Green Valley Lane, Sheboygan, with Pastor Brian DeJong officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Hartman Cemetery in Oostburg.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Al’s name to assist local law enforcement/emergency services. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the staff at the Waterford in Plymouth and the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their compassionate care.
