C. Richard “Dick” Henckel passed away on September 25, 2022, at the age of 92, in his hometown of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He was surrounded by his loving family, after a battle with dementia.
Born in 1930, Dick graduated from Central High School in 1948. He served in the Army Band in Germany from 1951-1953. He attended Lawrence University, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He also earned his Master’s Degree in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music, in Chicago, Illinois, in 1978.
Dick’s first teaching position was at Luxemburg High School where he taught until 1967. Following that, he returned to Sheboygan where he spent the rest of his career teaching for the Sheboygan Area School District. He affected hundreds of students over his long teaching career, whether in the classroom or the numerous students he taught privately outside of the school day.
He was an avid performer of the French Horn throughout his life, performing with groups such as the Wuerl Band and the Sheboygan Pops Concert Band, where he was also the assistant conductor. Dick was also honored by having his name displayed on the Fountain Park Wall of Fame, in Sheboygan.
When he wasn’t teaching, he enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, and supporting his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Cecelia (Drews), and brothers, Kenneth and Frederick. He is survived by members of his loving family, wife of 62 years, Elaine; children, Cheryl and Michael (Laura); and grandchildren, Kayla, Dylan, and Nolan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1439 S. 12th St., Sheboygan, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 12:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 9156.

Dearest Henckel family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I learned so much about music from Mr. Henckel and always enjoyed playing music with him in the Wuerl Band. Makes me sad to learn of this news but know he is united with many other great musicians! I will be thinking of you as you go through this difficult time and will say a prayer for your family. Love, Marci
