Carol Van Engen, age 90 of Sheboygan passed away Thursday September 7, 2023. Carol was born November 26, 1932, in Sheboygan to the late Arthur and Emily (Hermann) Westpfahl. Carol attended Lincoln Erdmann grade school, Central High School and graduated from Rufus King High School, Milwaukee in 1950. Carol worked at the family business, Westpfahl’s Bakery, financial institutions, and Phoenix Chair. She married Donald H. Van Engen on June 27, 1959; he preceded her in death on March 14, 2022. Carol was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, playing the organ and piano and singing in the choir. She was a strong supporter of the Sheboygan Music Club. Over the years she furnished musical talents for many churches, assisting pastors in chapel services at various nursing homes. Carol was active with the PTA at Bethlehem Lutheran School as well as Sheboygan Lutheran High School. She enjoyed embroidering and personalizing baptismal napkins for infants of Bethlehem families, flowers, doll collecting and watching figure skating on TV.
Carol is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Michael (Jennifer) Van Engen of Sheboygan, and their children Abigail Van Engen of De Pere and Bradley Van Engen of Sheboygan. She was also survived by a sister Grace A. and brother-in law David L. Reinecke of Sheboygan, brother-in-law James Schomberg of Sheboygan Falls, sister-in-law Lois Westpfahl of Mason, Ohio and Betty (Manning) Van Engen San Diego, CA also, by other relatives including cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Dr. Rev. Jim Westpfahl a sister Janice Schomberg and a brother-in-law Tom G. Van Engen.
Family and friends may gather at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1121 Georgia Ave. Sheboygan on Friday September 22, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Patrick Niles will officiate. Entombment to follow in the Garden Terrace Mausoleum in Lutheran Cemetery.
