Catherine Pauly passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 after a lengthy illness.

She was born Catherine Ann Tausend in Milwaukee on December 14, 1926 to Conrad and Mary Ethel (nee Lee) Tausend. She grew up in the Washington Highlands area of the city where she attended St. Sebastian’s Grade School and Holy Angels Academy, graduating in 1945. She was a 1949 graduate of Mt. Mary College with a degree in occupational therapy.

In 1950, she moved to Sheboygan where she established the first occupational therapy clinic at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital. While on the job, she was often visited by a young physician, Roman Pauly, who frequently tried to fix her up on dates with his friends. His matchmaking efforts proved unsuccessful and Dr. Pauly finally invited Catherine on a date himself. Six months later the couple was engaged and married on June 20, 1953, at St. Sebastian’s Church in Milwaukee. They were married until Dr. Pauly’s death in 1984.

Catherine is survived by her two daughters, Helen (John) Shiely of Elm Grove, WI, and Margaret (Stanley) Kaymen of Sheboygan and her daughter-in-law Mary Jo Pauly of Eden Prairie, MN. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, Michael (Shay) Shiely, Erin (Tobin) Mathew, Megan (Justin) Orofino, Christian (Annabelle) Pauly, Joe Pauly (fiancé Anna Fairbanks), Anne Wiesman and Mary Wiesman; one step grandson Stas (Dr. Emily) Kaymen and five great-grandchildren, Margaret, Vivian and Thad Shiely, Logan Mathew and Bailey Orofino. She is also survived by her sister Nancy (the late Donald) Radtke.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Roman, sisters Mary Jane and Helen Tausend and an infant grandson Stephen Shiely. Catherine was an avid reader, bridge player, and artist. She was active in the Women’s Medical Auxiliary of Sheboygan County and a 70 plus year member of Holy Name Parish.

Family and friends may gather at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 818 Huron Ave. Sheboygan on Friday August 25, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Fr. Norberto Sandoval will officiate. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.reinboldfh.com.

My deepest sympathy on the death of your mom. I delivered books to her from Mead Library for about 4 years. She was a wonderful lovely person and the friendship we developed over time I will treasure. Katy will be remembered by all of you for many things but I hope she is remembered mostly for the beautiful force of her spirit and her love for each of you. In her memory, a donation has been made to The Friends of Mead Library.
