Dale V. Deterding, age 62, of Sheboygan, died on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. He was born in Waterloo, Iowa on August 29, 1956 to the late Victor and Florence (Drape) Deterding.

Dale graduated from Marshall High School in 1974. He then attended UW-Madison and earned a bachelor’s degree in History in 1981 and a master’s degree in Educational Policy in 1983. On May 30, 1981 he married Julie Popp in Caledonia, WI.

As a licensed social worker, Dale worked at Sheboygan County Health & Human Services for 18 years, supervising Adult Protective Services, Caregiving, Senior Nutrition, Elder Benefits, Senior Transportation, and Long-Term Care programs. He previously worked at The Management Group (TMG) in Madison, and as a social worker in Jefferson and Dane Counties.

Dale’s calling in life was to ensure that people of all abilities were treated with dignity and able to live as independently as possible, on their own terms.

Dale was known and appreciated for his eclectic taste in music, passion for all things British, quick wit and irreverent sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Julie, of Sheboygan; twin daughters, Rachel Deterding, of Madison, Victoria Deterding, of Sheboygan; brothers and sisters, Dean (Susan) Deterding, of Georgia, Luella (Kort) Guild, Dan (Amy) Deterding and Lisa Deterding, all of Iowa; his step-mother, Edith (Les) Lindermann, of Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mark (fiancée Jayne Nelson) Popp, of Minnesota, Kurt (Mary) Popp, of Lodi, Brian (Sharon) Popp, of Caledonia, Mary Popp, of Arizona, Anne (Gene) Lewis and Sara Davis, both of Virginia and his father-in-law, Richard (Beverly) Popp, of Illinois. He is further survived by dear friends, Rick and Belinda Blasing, and Chuck and Joanie Hagberg, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dale was preceded in death by his mother and father, an infant brother, James and his mother-in-law, Kathleen Popp.

A visitation will be held for Dale on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Generations in Plymouth, 1500 Douglas Dr., Plymouth, WI, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, all donations will be distributed to meaningful causes in Dale’s life.

The Deterding family would like to express deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Froedtert Hospital, and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, for their expertise and care for Dale’s health and well-being. The family especially thanks Dr. Bryan Schmitt and Dr. Nicholas Draeger.

I just learned of Dale’s passing in 2019. We were close friends, living in the same apartment complex, while attending UW in the late 1970’s. I’ve often thought of him over the years. Condolences to his family.

Julie and girls, it's hard to think that I will never see Dale when I come into work again. But I know that your husband/father is now in a better place. He will deeply be missed here at the ADRC. Pat Hafermann

I am so sorry to hear of this loss. Dale and I worked together with the roll out of the Family Care Program in Sheboygan over 10 years ago, and he has worked collaboratively with our MCO since then in his role as the care management supervisor and most recently in his role with APS. Dale was very passionate in his beliefs and a constant advocate for people's rights. He will be missed by many. My prayers are with his family through this difficult time. Jen

Hi Julie, Victoria & Rachel - I knew Dale for the past 16 years, doing my field placement at the County and then working for him in different capacities after. I left the ADRC in 2014 to devote more time to my family (Julie, you probably remember me) and Dale was so supportive of that decision. He always had the utmost confidence in me - more than I had in myself. He was a supervisor who always "went to bat" for his employees and "had their back". I have so much respect for him and will miss him terribly. I wish that I would have known when we spoke last on the phone (within the past couple of months) that it was going to be the last time. My heart has been heavy since hearing of his illness/passing. He will be missed by the clients and employees he was such a strong advocate for. A very special man! I regret that I have a funeral in Illinois on Saturday and will not be able to attend the service in his honor. I will have a handful of M&Ms in remembrance of the many times I stood in his office to chat and snacked on chocolate that he provided. (He must've spent an annual salary on M&Ms throughout the years!) Please accept a huge hug and condolences from me. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers as you adjust to life without his witty presence.
