George Anton Hohmann, 92, of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 5, 2022. George was born on January 17, 1930, the son of the late Josef and Maria (Keller) Hohmann in the village of Otzbach, Thuringia, Germany. George moved to and lived in Erfurt, Germany from 1944 until 1947 where he learned his trade as a master painter and decorator. After receiving his journeyman card, he worked in East Germany for a time. In 1950 he crossed over into West Germany to pursue better opportunities. In 1951 he met his future wife, Gertrude Paffrath, in Leverkusen, Germany. They were united in marriage on October 30, 1954 in Opladen, West Germany. After the birth of their first son, Volker, in December 1955, they immigrated to the United States in November 1956. They came to Sheboygan, Wisconsin where they were sponsored by Gertrude and Emil Lehberger. At first, George worked at Hydraulic Tools Corporation in Sheboygan but quickly found work in his preferred trade and specialty as a painter and decorator at Strains Decorating. After Roland Strains retired, George assumed ownership of Strains Decorating. He founded the family business, Hohmann Painting, with his wife and sons. After more than 50 years in the trade, George retired from the trade in 1995. After retirement, George and Trudy continued their involvement in various German ethnic and cultural activities such as the Concordia German Singing Society and the D’werdenfelser Bavarian Dancing Group. George and Trudy often opened their home to members of singing groups and visitors from Germany. George and Trudy loved traveling to Germany to visit family and friends. George also had a lifelong affinity for the outdoors. He loved hunting with his sons and spending time at the cottage.
George is survived by his wife, Gertrude; four sons, Volker, Michael, Paul (Luann) and Thomas; granddaughter, Melissa (Joe) Morrissey; grandsons, Benjamin (Melanie) Hohmann of La Grange, OH and Richard Hohmann; great-grandchildren, Brett, Jaiden and Bryce Morrissey and Easton and Sawyer Hohmann.
