Penny Ann Patz, born Penny Ann Farley, grew up in Garden, Michigan. Grounded in the deep roots of her parents, Doris Boudreau and Norval Farley, she developed the joyful spirit and strong values she carried throughout her life. Penny was the beloved wife of Murray Patz, her high school sweetheart, and together they were in their 60th year of marriage. She was a devoted mother of her three boys: Todd, Tabb, and Tyler — as well as a loving grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, and friend. Penny is survived by her husband Murray; her sons Tabb (Andi) and Tyler (Gina); her sister Patty Heslip; and grandsons Aaron and Milo, who lovingly called her “Grammy.” She was tragically preceded in death by her son Todd in 2020.
Keeping family traditions alive was incredibly important to her – a lifelong value she shared lovingly with her children and grandchildren. She shared herself with those outside the family as well, giving as compassionately as she could.
Penny was not just a woman of strong values; she was fun. Forever a kid at heart, she was bubbly, kind, and quick witted. Her great sense of humor and warmth made her a delight to be around for people and animals alike. A devoted cat lover, Penny referred to herself as “Grandmeow.” She especially adored her dear cat, Torby, who was a constant companion and a source of joy and solace over the last several years.
A point of tremendous pride for Penny was her Native American ancestry. She had recently been recognized as a lifetime member of Upper Michigan’s Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of the Chippewa Indians. The family is deeply grateful that she received this connection and recognition before her passing.
“I give you this, one thought to keep.
I am with you still, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush…
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that
shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone –
I am with you still, in each new dawn.”
(Native American poem)
Penny’s passing has been very difficult for those she leaves behind, but her life — filled with love, generosity, faith, and exuberant energy — will be remembered with deep affection.
In accordance with Penny’s wishes, there will be no public gathering.
Reinbold-Novak Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
