Sheldon was born on March 18, 1946, to Earl and Lillian Lieberg in Roseau, Minnesota. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1964 where he was a “Proud Raider” who proclaimed in his senior quote “Why take life seriously? You never get out alive anyway.”
