Vernette Joan Cowles, age 89, passed into eternal life with her Savior on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. She was born December 7, 1931 to George and Emma Ovel in New Vienna, Iowa. She married her high school sweetheart, Dey Cowles, on January 2, 1950. Their marriage was a love story for 69 1/2 years! She was a faithful homemaker and mom to five children.
She loved to sing with her sisters when she was young and carried her love for music throughout her life. Vernette was athletic in high school and a lifelong Wisconsin sports fan alongside her husband. She was intelligent, witty, and seldom lost a game of Scrabble! She dedicated her time to take care of her husband and children. Vernette was an amazing cook, often taking meals to those in need. She had a servant’s heart that consistently put others needs before her own. She enjoyed ministering to shut-ins at the nursing home with Bible studies for many years. Most importantly she was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, who dedicated her life and gifts to serve Him and others – a wonderful example for all of us. A prayer warrior who prayed daily for family and friends!
Vernette is survived by two sons, Richard (Karna) of Farmington, MN, David (Pat) of Urbana, IL; two daughters, Debra (Steve) Gill of Sheboygan and Christine (Tom) Newcomer of Kernersville, NC, and daughter-in-law, Tina Cowles of Lakewood, CO; 6 grandchildren, Erik (Heather) Cowles of Farmington, MN, Christopher (Britteny) Gill of St. Louis Park, MN, Corey Gill of Sheboygan, Jordan (Dara) Newcomer of Rockwall, TX, Jana (Corey) Schaal of High Point, NC and Kalia Cowles of Lakewood, CO; and 4 great-grandchildren and another one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dey; her parents; her brothers, Walt, Ron and Don; her sisters, Corene and Charlotte, son, Jan and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Greenlawn Memorial Park Chapel, 6706 Superior Ave., Sheboygan from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m.
